Assassination and murder of children, The plot sickens

Two white supremacists (Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman, 18, of West Helena, Ark.) have been arrested by federal agents for plotting to shoot or decapitate dozens of non-white students in Tennessee, then Barack Obama:

Pain by the numbers: 88 blacks, 14 non-whites targeted

Reports of exactly how many students Cowart and Schlesselman intended to kill vary from source to source, but from what I can gather, it appears they intended to shoot 88 black students and decapitate 14 other non-white students.  The letter H is the 8th letter of the alphabet.  The number 88 represents the first letter of each word in the phrase “heil hitler”.  Apparently a popular white supremacist phrase is comprised of 14 words, which is where the significance of 14 came from.

Racism is a mental illness

I am glad the plotters were apprehended before they could harm anyone, but I do fear we will see more of this sort of thing in the future.  It is truly unfortunate that after all this time, people still have so much fear of people who are different from themselves.  That is all racism is, you know.  Hatred born of irrational fear.  I do not believe that being racist is a choice people make.  I believe it is a mental illness, and I am not the only one.

One thing is for sure, regardless of how far the world has come in addressing racism, we have a long road ahead of us.  I only hope we reach the end with as few casualties as possible.

Election spindrama, or legitimate threat?

Reading some of the comments over at Politico indicate that some believe the whole story has been blown way out of proportion, that the neo-nazi duo did not have the resources to pull off their scheme.  And looking at the data available, that might not be far off the mark.  Cowart and Schlesselman did indicate that they would kill the students, and then go on a national killing spree with Barack Obama being a target of opportunity that they believed they would never successfully kill.  They believed they would be killed in the attempt.

I would think the dozens and dozens of students who were in far greater danger than Obama would be the focus of media attention, but an assassination attempt on Obama makes for better headlines this close to an election, I suppose.
